27th International Carbohydrate Symposium
The 27th International Carbohydrate Symposium (ICS27) held at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India (January 12 -17, 2014) was attended by UCT’s “Glyco Group” of academics and students from the Departments of Chemistry and Computer Science. This bi-annual meeting covers all topics of carbohydrate chemistry, biology, materials and industrial applications with the aim of expanding the frontiers of carbohydrate science, technology and glycobiology. The 2014 Symposium attracted over 700 delegates from 40 countries.
A/Prof Neil Ravenscroft – Developing appropriate glycoconjugate vaccines for Africa
A/Prof David Gammon – Synthesis of natural and unnatural sugars related to bacterial targets
Prof Graham Jackson - Structural and Conformational Analysis of Complex Polysaccharides of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines by NMR
A/Prof Michelle Kuttel – Molecular modeling of Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular polysaccharide antigens.
Ms Taigh Anderson – Alternative synthesis towards the monomers of the Shigella sonnei O-Polysaccharide repeating unit.
Mr Denis Ngumbu Muhunga – Synthesis of side-chain-modified mycothiol analogues incorporating carbazole quinones, and evaluation as inhibitors of enzymes in the Mycobacteria
